These kernel debs are based on 2.6.21.6 plus a set of patches that perform per bdi throttling to help with the absolutely insane perfomance issues that have been a problem since 2.6.18. I used the build process described here: http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html to build "official" Debian kernel packages for each architecture type. I built and tested them under Etch (Debian 4.0) and they really help with the disk iowait hell. This issue is very well documented here: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7372

I had to patch the kernel and part of the Debian build scripts to get it all working under Etch. I've provided the combined patch against the stock Debian linux source package. This patch also corrects the issue where the drives do not detect correctly under VMware. Of course, it still has the vmware issue where a recent change in interrupt vector handling still locks up totally on AMD64... It would be so nice to get this fix backported to 2.6.18, but alas it is beyond my skills.
