Whit Sunday, or the Feast of Pentecost, occurs ten days after Ascension Day, and commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit. Epistles and gospels are appointed for the Monday and Tuesday in Witsun week; and the American book provides new collects, also, which are followed by the collect for Whit Sunday. It will be noted that the American book contains also an alternative collect, epistle and gospel to be used at a second celebration of the Holy Communion on Whit Sunday.
The Wednesday, Friday and Saturday after Whit Sunday are Ember Days. The Canadian and American books provide lessons and the same collect, epistle and gospel that are used for Ember Days in Advent are again read. The American book directs that the collect for Whit Sunday be used throughout the week (in addition to any others appointed) and the same practice is generally followed in the Canadian Church.
